NYC, September 2002 - Duane Sherwood

Looking back, it's impossible to chronicle everything that occured in NYC during the year that abruptly began on the morning of September 11, 2001. No matter how many news documentaries are made, the complete story is too big to tell. The memory of it is an odd thing. The combination of a complete blur and a highly detailed recollection.

We could easily mourn this loss, as well as that in Washington and the heroic fields of Pennsylvania, for the rest of our lives. Time will not stand still to allow it. The threats we still face require our focused attention, around the world and around the corner. As the city continues to recover, we remain alert to the possibility of another attack here. This is still the American target of choice.

The one thing that's constant is change itself. NYC hasn't stopped changing since the day it was founded. Like a snake devouring its own tail, this city has an uncanny ability to regenerate itself. That ability is the key to its strength. Even an attack this brutal can't stop it.

The gallery has been updated with new entries from Autumn 2001, Winter 2002, and the Summer 2002. Small fragments from the evolving portrait of a recovering city in transition.

One part of that transition is that, for the time being, the Empire State Building is once again the tallest building in NYC.
